NMA Programs

Local NMA Health Initiatives

Consistent with its Strategic Plan, the NMA SDS supports four health initiatives related to Colon Cancer, Diabetes, HIV and Immunizaiton.

Cancer

Colorectal cancer is a term used to refer to cancer that starts in the colon or rectum. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer found in men and women in this country. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 106,680 new cases of colon cancer and 41,930 new cases of rectal cancer in 2006 in the United States.

Diabetes

In 2005, the SDS of the NMA received a mini-grant from the Network of Ethnic Physicians Organization. The focus of this grant was to increase local awareness about diabetes. The specific goal of the grant was to "organize and disseminate culturally appropriate education programs and resources to the San Diego NMA Society members and other local physician colleagues."

HIV

The SDC of the NMA has formed a strategic alliance with the Kemet Coalition, Inc., a coalition of local HIV service providers, to increase the awareness and knowledge of San Diego African American physicians about the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the local community, local services available for patients, and the latest information on treatment options for patients.

Immunization

Immunizations are needed for all children from birth through age 18, given at birth, and at ages 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 12-18 months, 4-6 years and 11-12 years. While not requiring as many, adults also should obtain certain immuinzations to warn off vaccine preventable diseases. In either case, consult your primary care provider, to find out which vaccinations are needed, based one's age.

National NMA Health Programs

The NMA SDS supports the National NMA programs of Asthma and Smoking Cessation by desseminating information regarding these topics to members, their patients, and the general public.

Asthma

Over 26,000,000 Americans have asthma. The number of people diagnosed with asthma has increased all over the world but the problem among African Americans has reached epidemic proportions, in spite of significant advancement in the treatment of the disease. Asthma affects African Americans disproportionately. NMA conducts a national program -- Asthma, Clear the Air Campaign -- under the direction of Dr. Michael Lenoir, Oakland.

Smoking Cessation

Educating NMA phsyicians about the latest techniques, treatment, and programs for smoking cessation is a priority for the NMA. Over the past three years and due the leadership from NMA Region II, regional focus on smoking cessation has been a salient part of the regional meetings with sponsorship by Glaxo Smith Kline.
